Art Quilts by Lynn Kinsey
My love for needlework began in childhood in southern Africa and I began teaching hand embroidery part-time when living in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
When I moved back to my native Zimbabwe I began teaching embroidery there, as there were no teachers of embroidery in the country. After joining the Patchwork and Quilting Guild in 2009, I made my first quilt in 2010 and entered that year’s show as a novice, beginning a run of trophy-winning entries. I later completed the demanding, year-long teachers’ course through the South African Quilters’ Guild and became a qualified quilt teacher. Moving to Wales in late 2018, I joined the British Quilters’ Guild, plus the Contemporary Group.
My loves are designing and constructing art quilts and teaching all aspects of needlework and fibre art. My inspiration comes through widespread travels. I’m an avid photographer and many of my photographs inspire my fabric art creations. Colour, texture and form provide challenging tools. Using the needle as a paintbrush and the spectrum of threads as my palette allows me to transform fabrics. The resulting art pieces belong on the wall as much as any painting.
The exhibition at the Bleddfa Centre is my first solo exhibition in the UK.
Lynn's art quilts will be exhibited in the Bleddfa Gallery on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th of January, 11am - 4pm. There will also be an embroidery exhibition next door in St. Mary Magdalene's Church at the same time. Come along and see both exhibitions and enjoy some tasty refreshments in the Reading Room café.
